My New York Times Debut in the Retirement Section!

It's sometimes hard to believe I am retirement age! I know all of us baby boomers who are in our sixties struggle with the whole concept of aging. I still think of myself as just another woman who finished menopause and had a little face work but still certainly not old!
So, when I was asked to be in an article about my local gym for the NY Times I, of course, thought it would be in the Health & Fitness section, at the least, but NOOO...not the Fashion or Style section, either, but the RETIREMENT section! And certainly not wearing some cute outfit and the cool jewelry from my shop but ,of all things, my gym clothes!
Ok, another wake up call!

Purple Hair - Why Not?

So why the purple hair? I say, "Why not?"
As many of you know, I keep dying my gray hair purple! I've had purple hair extensions, and for about the last six years, I've been dying streaks of my hair purple... so here's the story why...

About ten years ago, I attended a creativity workshop in Santa Barbara. There were about 50 people sitting in a circle and, as we took turns introducing ourselves I noticed most of them didn't really need to be more creative, especially with their appearance! That was the first time I'd ever seen anyone with a new color of hair.

When it was her turn to introduce herself, this purple haired woman said, "It occurred to me that women color their hair red, black, brown, blonde and variations of all these colors, so I figured as long as I'm coloring my hair, why not use the rest of the colors available, so, since then, I've been experimenting with blue, green, pink and now purple... and I love it!"

So I started thinking about what she said and well - you can see the results. I'm still stuck on purple. Recently I was in Atlanta and met a woman with rainbow colored hair! She said she's been rainbow colored for the past 19 years! And she told me about Manic Panic, the greatest hair stain she'd ever used. So when I was in New York, I found it! Manic Panic at Ricky's on the upper west side! I was thrilled, and bought Passion Purple for $20 a jar.
I gave it to my hairdresser and it was just too pale, more lavender than purple... so this past weekend, Allan and I divided my hair in sections and slathered it on. I left it in my hair for four hours and this is the result! It's kinda splotchy, but I love it. If you want advice on how to color coordinate with purple hair, below are couple of my favorite jewelry pieces from my shop! Check them out on my web site: http://dforsythepearls.com/

New York Gift Show

Yes, it was cold! We California folks have thin blood and thick coats!
Allan and I had a magical week in New York, mostly at the Javits Center doing the "personal accessories" and "handmade" divisions of the most amazing gift show in the US!

And although it was 14 degrees outside, all the store windows were all about SPRING!

This was the window at Bendel's...all about pink and cupcakes!

This was my favorite find in the entire show. I spent several hours and several thousand dollars with them. Unfortunately, I can't show you any of their pieces, since everything had to be shipped later. But I can tell you their pieces were huge and  funky with real gemstones, at a great price. I'll send pictures when I receive the shipment. I bought carnelian, turquoise, rose quartz and jasper, all set in lucious golden toned brass.

Below was their ring and bracelet bar, where I filled two heaping trays.

New York is where you see it all! Including fashion... so here's what I saw:
  • brightly colored scarves
  • ballerina slippers with black fishnet hose
  • huge, chunky necklaces
  • boots, boots, boots

LA Gift Show Finds

After the Atlanta Gift show I was concerned the LA Gift show the next week would be disappointing afterall, the Atlanta show was four buildings of 12 stories each of endless treasures!
But after attending the LA show for five years I know the vendors with the amazingly fabulous jewlery! And sure enough they didn't disappoint me...
West coast trends were a bit more exaggerated than the south...
  • Wider cuffs than you can imagine! Yes, this is a cuff bracelet, though it looks like gilded amour with crystals (I didn't buy this one)
  • Hot Pink and all the shades of pink were every where and flowered pieces. It will be a very feminine spring.
  • I did buy these. Coral and lemon quartz 1.5 inch wide cuffs. $75 each.
You know where to find us... look for a web sale coming soon.

2010 Spring Fashion Trends from Atlanta Gift Show

What's hot for spring from Atlanta, the largest gift show in the country?

Huge bracelets! In all fun inexpensive metals, copper, brass and pewter. ($75)

Other new looks for spring:
  • Gray, anything in pewter tones.
  • Whimsical pieces of huge faux pearls, chains and rhinestones.
  • Small picture framed sayings, initals and fun pictures to be attached to keychains, ballchain necklaces and bracelets.($15)

This  was my first trip to the Atlanta gift show and it was truly amazing! Everyone seemed shocked that there was such a huge turnout, not only new vendors but tons of wholesale buyers from all over the world. And everyone was buying! It was such a shot in the arm for the economic slump.

My novice impressions were as follow:
1. We have become global comsumers. Silver from Bali, pearls from China, gemstones from Brazil, and funky, bizarre feather and shell jewlery from Fance (I bought a bunch of these of course)
2. Many of the vendors were small family owned businesses, not big corporations. So I met some wonderful innovative people. Call me if you want to hear some great stories!
3. This show is huge! They had everything from life-like Halloween monsters to giant handblown glass chandeliers to a hundred strand pearl necklace.
4. My mink and leather vest was perfect for the sub-zero weather!
